Malaysia is a multi-ethnic country with several religions. The majority of Malaysians are Muslim, and Islam is the state religion, but already the old Malay kingdoms had a long tradition of non-muslim communities living there, and there is little xenophobia or disrespect, especially from the side of the muslim majority. In a way, with respect to tolerance of minority religions, Malaysian society is much more mature than most Western societies. Though it's not perfect ... at the fringes of society, there are violent and extremist people.
