One of the less pleasant encounters in the Namib desert can be with the Namib sidewinding adder. Its venom is reported to be extremely painful. Not deadly but you wish you died. Fortunately it is not very aggressive to animals above prey size so you only have to be careful not to step onto it. It has its name of course from its peculiar sidewinding motion
