Sossusvlei
September 2010 25 |
The Sossusvlei is probably the most famous tourist feature of Namibia (with Dune 45 being the most photographed place in the country). It is in the desert but not completely without vegetation; there are bushes and even trees everywhere. At the end of the area accessible by road is the Deadvlei, a salty pan with many black, dead tree stumps. The sun is burning here and it is hot and dry, so it is advisable to visit this place in the morning or late afternoon. Access is open only during daylight, and the gates are about one hour's drive from the Deadvlei, which means that there is not a lot of morning or late afternoon available.
In the desert, There are also colonies of exceptionally thirsty weaver birds, and steppe animals (antelope, ostriches)
