Hong Kong Island

Hong Kong consists of several islands and a part of the Chinese mainland. It is named for Hong Kong island, the original British colony, which today holds the city's "downtown" with administrative buildings and central business district. In Cantonese, the name of the city sounds more like "Heung Gong", and in Mandarin, "Xiang Gang".

Hong Kong island is actually a mountain peeking out of the water, and most of the island, though it is very small, is not paved or built-up. The largest sprawl is at the Northern coast of the island, where together with the mainland opposite it forms an excellent natural harbour, Victoria harbour. Near the water, there are mostly commercial and administrative buildings. On the mountain flank, there are plenty of residential areas with high-rise apartment buildings, and closer to the top of "the Peak", as the mountain is called, you will find the really pricey apartments.
