Macao

Macau was a Portuguese colony long before the British came to nearby Hong Kong. But in the development of the 19th and 20th century, Hong Kong has overtaken Macau in size and trade volume, and Macau is now something like a sleepy backwater. Its main source of income appears to be gambling - bus- and boatloads of visitors come from Hong Kong and from the mainland and spend all their money in the Macao casinos.
Macao is a pleasant 90 minute boat ride from Hong Kong, and there are plenty of boats daily from Kowloon and from Hong Kong Island to Macao. It also serves as a budget airport for Hong Kong with direct ferries connecting Macao airport to downtown Hong Kong. Travel via land would require to enter the People's Republic, so that is no option for Western visitors without a Chinese visa.
