Besides Cheetahs, Amani lodge also keeps one leopard, though it cannot be rehabilitated. Leopards cannot be kept as pets: they are quite strong and do not know when they are going to hurt people. They have some inborn reflexes that make them dangerous when they reach a certain age. People always try (especially when farmers shoot a female and then find she had a few cubs, they try to raise the cubs as pets) but as a leopard grows up, it has to be kept away from people.

The latin word for leopard was "pardus". Cheetahs, when discovered, were initially also called "pardus" due to their similarities in size and markings, but when people learned that cheetahs are a different type of animals, they called them the "cat-pardus" or "gattopardo" in Italian. The original "pardus" then became the "lion-pardus" or "leopardo".
