From Otjiwarongo in the Etosha National Park, we went via Khorixas and the Petrified Forest to the area of Twyfelfontein.
The Petrified Forest is, as the name indicates, an area in which a large number of petrified trees have been found. They almost look like normal tree stumps or logs, but if you touch them or try to lift them, you notice that they are made of stone, not wood. There are a few sites where you can see those trees, and as an add on, there are also Welwitschia plants in the area. This was the first time we saw Welwitschia plants.
Twyfelfontein itself is the site of an abandoned farm where the water supply was not reliable (the name means "doubtful fountain"). Near the site, a large number of old rock carvings from prehistoric Namibians were found (well, pre-history ran until pretty recently in this part of Africa). A lot of them show local animals, suprisingly including penguins, some of them are maps of water holes or other pictures.
We stayed in the Twyfelfontein Country Lodge, which is a pretty big and rather nice place with excellent food (first time I had crocodile) and singing waiters and cooks. Desert Elephants are living in the area and visiting the lodge sometimes, which means to be careful when walking around in the night.
On the next day, we left Twyfelfontein for Swakopmund, and because we had a four wheel drive, we chose to drive past Brandberg and Spitzkoppe on a very bad gravel track.
