Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) was for the British the most important place in Kuala Lumpur: the Padang, their cricket field. To one side of it was the seat of the administration (the Sultan Abdul Samad building), on the other side was the Club, which still houses one of the most elite Clubs (the Royal Selangor Club) of the city
