Architecture and civil engineering in Kuala Lumpur seem to be always a mix between the ugly and the beautiful. You see beautiful old buildings like the Masjid Jamek surrounded by the unadorned embankments of rivers Klang and Gombak. (Remember that this is a tropical country - river levels may rise after heavy rainfalls. You can recognise the embankments were build for this, but at normal water levels, they are not exactly a pretty sight.) The old buildings are dwarfed by modern skyscrapers of course, but at least in KL, most of the skyscrapers tend to have an interesting design. So it never gets boring to look around.
