When Sevilla's dignitaries had the cathedral of Sevilla erected, they had the intention to build a cathedral so huge that future generations would think the builders mad. (This makes me think of Gaudi—whether he had similar intentions or not, if you see La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, you truly think he was mad.) Until today, it is the largest cathedral of the world, and one of the largest churches – some younger churches are bigger, but they are not cathedrals. Its predecessor as largest church of the world wa, for almost a millenium, Hagia Sophia in Constantinople.
The Sevilla cathedral is built on the site of the former mosque of Sevilla, and it retained the mosque's minaret as the belfry - La Giralda. It is therefore no coincidence that La Giralda and the minaret of Koutoubia mosque in Marrakech look so similar - they were built to the same design. Sevilla has the copy, the original is in Marrakech.
