Similan New Year Cruise 2007
January 2007 59 |
2006 ended with a special Similan Islands cruise on Vilai Samut . This was quite a good boat for a reasonable price. Spacious, rather good cabins, and good food (though not as good as on White Manta). There were two things I disliked: one is that there was only one sitting area on the boat, and it had a big TV and video equipment, and the other is that they had only Chang beer and no Singha.
Unfortunately, the sea was unusally cold - could be down to 23°C in the water. Normally it shouldn't be below 27°C, so I wasn't equipped and I was freezing most of the time. It's good I brought my hood and my lycra skin and also bought a pair of gloves in Phuket.
On the first day, we started around Ko Bon/Ko Tachai and slowly made our way north. I used the 14-54 lens on that day, which was probably OK for the marine life we encountered.
The first two dives were at Richelieu Rock. Unfortunately I lost the group on the first dive, but the second dive was quite good. This was the first time ever I used my new Macro lens, and it really is great.
Third and fourth day were spent in the Similans.
Third and fourth days were spent in the Similans.
On the 5th day, it was back to Ko Bon, and then towards the coast to the Boon Sung wreck (a tin dredge, not a boat) halfway to the mainland. This season, Manta rays were seen at Ko Bon practically on every dive, but we didn't know it back then, the phenomenon had just started around Christmas and news hadn't spread that fast. It's probably related to the cold.
