Hong Kong 2011
June 2011 72 |
A business trip to Hong Kong in June 2011 gave me the opportunity to visit the city and see a few of its sights. I had been to Hong Kong for a short stopover a couple of years ago, but at that time I did not have the time to see more than the main tourist centers. Hong Kong is a very busy place. Kowloon, especially the district of Mong Kok, is one of the most densely populated areas of the world, and the business district of Hong Kong Island, on the opposite side of Victoria Harbour, is equally densely populated with offices and shops. But there are also large rural areas, country side villages and mountains.
Hong Kong has a reputation as a shopping paradise, and it is primarily a trading place, but at least for electronics and technical equipment, the bargain times are over. Prices are mostly similar to what they are in Germany, minus taxes. Some items, though, are still cheap - clothes, and surplus "Made in China" production for example. Hong Kong is also a place for food lovers, though not as diverse as Singapore. But the selection and variety are good.
Direct connections are one of the advantages of living in a place like Frankfurt, and Hong Kong's airline Cathay Pacific has an excellent reputation. Hong Kong's airport is large and modern, with express rail links to the city. All very convenient.
