Redang

Redang is an island about 30km south of the Perhentians, which has pretty good diving. There is usually a much better visibility than in the Perhentians, and much the same marine life otherwise.
The problem with Redang is, it is organised by resorts. There's a bunch of resorts on the island complete with restaurants and dive shops, and you pretty much live, eat and dive in your resort. Organisation is usually by package tour. It's not bad if you live in KL or Singapore and want to spend a long weekend for diving, but it's not really a place where you simply go to and see what's up.
The good news is, from the Perhentians there are sometimes day tours to Redang, with 3 dives around the island. The tour goes on a slow boat (fishing boat) which takes 2-3 hours to reach Redang, and back in the afternoon of course. Not as relaxed as diving from the Perhentians, but better than staying on Redang in one of those resorts.
