Uluru, or Ayer's Rock, is the most famous tourist destination in the red centre of Australia, and people who can spend only one day in the area would go to Uluru. There is a local airport, and a resort town in the desert (Yulara). Roadside camping is prohibited for hundreds of kilometers around the site.

Uluru itself is a sandstone rock with about 9km circumference which sits in an otherwise flat plain. It is not the only monolith of this kind in the area - the nearby Kata Tjuta had been a similar rock long time ago, and there are other monoliths in the Australian desert here and there. Maybe it's the most famous because it was the first one discovered by white people. Uluru is a spiritual site of the native Australians and therefore climbing it is depreciated, although not outright forbidden
